What We Need

It is just as well we do not see,
in the shadows behind the hasty tent
of the Allen Brothers Greatest Show,
Lola the Lion Tamer and the Great Valdini
in Nikes and jeans
sharing a tired cigarette
before she girds her wrists with glistening amulets
and snaps the tigers into rage,
before he adjusts the glimmering cummerbund
and makes from air
the white and trembling doves, the pair.

CE DE QUOI NOUS AVONS BESOIN

C’est exactement comme si nous ne voyons pas
Dans l’ombre derrière la tente
Du Grand Spectacle d'Allen Brothers dressée à la hâte
Lola la dompteuse de lions et le grand Valdini
En baskets et jeans
Partageant une cigarette triturée
Avant qu’elle n’entoure ses poignets
D’amulettes scintillantes
Et ne mette les tigres en rage,
Avant que lui n’ajuste sa ceinture miroitante
Et ne fasse jaillir de l’air
Une paire de colombes toute blanches
Et toutes frémissantes !
